Manish Pandey - Candidate for Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board (Riccarton Ward)
I migrated to New Zealand in May 2008 from India as an International student. I am originally from Sasaram, Rohtas a Historic city of state Bihar.
I have done MBA with Marketing specialization and Post Graduate Diploma in Information & Communication technology. I am a software professional.
Christchurch earthquake in 2010 changed my life completely. My rented property was cordoned and we were not allowed to go inside due to massive structural damage to our house. I had taken my friends in car. I got an invite from a stranger to stay at their home. Me and my friends spent a week with them and they didn’t take any rent from us.
I decided to give back to my community, my extended family. I joined Riccarton Community Patrol as Volunteer Patroller in November 2011 and Christchurch Multicultural Council in January 2012. Looking at my community engagements local MP nominated me for Justices of the Peace for New Zealand. I became JP in November 2016. Back in 2016-17 I was one of the youngest ethnic JP in South Island.
My association with Christchurch Multicultural Council gave me an opportunity to work and know different cultures in Christchurch and New Zealand. I was actively involved in New Zealand’s first Multicultural Strategy launch by Christchurch City Council. I served Christchurch Multicultural Council as Secretory for 2016-17. I am current Vice President of Christchurch Multicultural Council. During 30th Anniversary of Christchurch Multicultural Council’s AGM I got Special Appreciation certificate for my Active involvement in community.
We all as a county are impacted by March 15th incident. My involvement with local community of Riccarton since last 10 years and association with Multicultural Council motivated me to be voice for Riccarton community and I put my name forward for Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board Candidate to represent Riccarton under The People’s Choice banner (The People’s Choice is local party of Labor Party). I want to be voice of people of Riccarton. I will be working for Social Inclusion & United Diversity in Riccarton as well as whole Christchurch as an experienced person who knows the Multiculturalism. We need to have diverse local board so we can understand each other values and different cultures. As former mayor of Christchurch Garry Moore said “Diversity isn’t important in politics, It is essential.
